P0299 Underboost Fault: Sticking Intake Flap.

PEARLS VEHICLE SERVICES · 6 NOVEMBER 2026

An engine warning light and reduced power do not automatically mean the turbo needs replacing. In this example, a sticking intake flap was identified during investigation of a P0299 underboost fault.

What does fault code P0299 mean?

P0299 refers to turbocharger or supercharger underboost. It means the engine management system has detected that the expected boost pressure has not been reached. It is an underboost code, rather than an overboost code.

The code points to a boost-related problem, but does not identify the faulty part on its own. Replacing a turbo based only on a fault code can miss the underlying cause.

A sticking intake flap

The intake flap helps control airflow into the engine. If it sticks or fails to move as commanded, it can affect airflow and the way the engine operates.

In the case shown here, the sticking intake flap was identified as the cause behind the P0299 fault. This does not mean every vehicle with P0299 has the same problem: the intake system, boost control and other relevant components need checking for that particular vehicle.

Symptoms worth reporting

  • An engine management warning light.
  • Reduced power or limp mode.
  • Poor acceleration or an intermittent loss of performance.

These symptoms can have several causes. Tell your mechanic when they happen, whether they change as the engine warms up and whether the fault returns after restarting.

Finding the cause before choosing a repair

A sensible investigation starts with reading the stored fault codes and checking the vehicle’s condition. Relevant checks may include intake flap operation, intake and boost hoses, sensor readings and boost control. The findings determine the repair required.
